Between Colonial Charm and Caribbean Spirit

Between Colonial Charm and Caribbean Spirit

My journey through Cuba starts in the fascinating capital, Havana — a city full of history, music, and unique charm. I set out to explore Havana, and it feels like stepping into another time — a world where the clocks tick slower and the past is still alive. In my bag, I already have the TAMRON 28-200 mm packed. Classic cars from the 1950s roll past me, colorful facades crumble under the Caribbean sky, and from every street corner, the rhythms of Son Cubano — a traditional Cuban music style — fill the air.

Havana is a city of contrasts. In Havana Vieja, the old town, colonial architecture lines up around lively little squares where locals play dominoes and street musicians create a nostalgic atmosphere. A highlight is the Malecón promenade — one of the best places to watch the sunset. Here, Habaneros, musicians, and dancers meet to spend the evening together. The view of the sea, combined with the exuberant mood, makes the moment magical. I let myself drift, stroll through Calle Obispo, past bars Hemingway once visited, and end the day with a Daiquirí at the famous “Floridita” bar.

Viñales – Cuba’s green paradise and the art of tobacco farming

Viñales – Cuba’s green paradise and the art of tobacco farming

On my journey through Cuba, a detour to Viñales — the heart of Cuban tobacco farming — was a must. This region, surrounded by the famous mogotes — imposing limestone cliffs — is not only a dream landscape but also a place where tradition and craftsmanship are still alive.

A visit to a tobacco farm is a must here. Farmers still work today with centuries-old knowledge and pure handwork. From the careful cultivation of the plants to the artful processing of the leaves — every step is carried out with the greatest care. In the muted atmosphere of the drying barns, where the tobacco leaves hang on wooden beams, a special play of light makes the scene appear almost picturesque.

Alongside the fascinating tobacco production, Viñales impresses with its pristine nature. The gentle hills, endless fields, and dense palm groves offer spectacular views, especially in the early morning when mist drapes the mogotes. With the right camera equipment, you can capture impressive landscapes and authentic portraits of the locals — every detail tells its own story.

Trinidad – a colonial jewel

Trinidad – a colonial jewel

Trinidad is a city like from another time. Cobblestone streets and colorful colonial houses shape the cityscape and give this place its unique charm. Founded in the 16th century, Trinidad is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site and considered one of Cuba’s most beautiful cities. A walk through the historic center feels like a journey into the past — past pastel facades, small art galleries, and lively squares filled with Caribbean rhythms.

A highlight is the Plaza Mayor, the heart of the city, surrounded by magnificent colonial buildings like the Palacio Cantero, now a museum offering spectacular views over the city. Just a few kilometers away, the Valle de los Ingenios — once the center of sugar production — invites you to dive into history. Those who want to explore nature will find impressive waterfalls and hiking trails through lush tropical forests in the nearby Topes de Collantes National Park.

Trinidad is a place where history, culture, and nature come together — and where you can feel the Cuban zest for life in every alley. Whether you stroll through the streets, try a traditional cigar, or enjoy the sunset with a Canchánchara cocktail — this city leaves a lasting impression.

Caribbean dream beaches and untouched island paradises

Caribbean dream beaches and untouched island paradises

Cuba is a true gem for beach lovers — endless sandy beaches, crystal-clear water, and a relaxed atmosphere make the island a dream destination. But off the well-known coasts awaits a special highlight: Cayo Iguana.

This small, untouched island delights with snow-white sand and turquoise water that glistens in the sun. You can only reach Cayo Iguana by catamaran — a ride that is already part of the experience. As you glide over the open sea, the warm sea breeze brushes against you, and the endless blue immediately puts you in vacation mode. Once on the island, pure idyll awaits you. Alongside the paradisiacal beaches, it is especially the island’s residents that make for a unique encounter: numerous iguanas roam freely through nature and offer a unique photo opportunity.
