Lens focal length – which one is right for you?

Lens focal length – which one is right for you?

The focal length of a lens directly influences how a subject appears: How much of the surroundings are shown? How close does the subject appear? How blurred is the background? Fixed focal lengths give you particularly precise control over the image effect and perspective – ideal if you want to consciously shape your images.

Whether you're photographing people, capturing landscapes or documenting moments in the city, choosing a specific focal length changes the message of your image. It helps you emphasise the mood, set your focus clearly and develop your signature style as a photographer.

Quick explanation: what does focal length mean?

The focal length (e.g. 35 mm, 50 mm, 85 mm) describes the image section and perspective. It determines

  • how wide or narrow the image angle is,

  • how large a subject is depicted,

  • and how much distance you need from the subject.

The shorter the focal length, the wider the angle of view – ideal for including surroundings. With longer focal lengths, you can bring calm to the image and bring your subject more into the foreground.

Typical focal lengths at a glance

35 mm – versatile and dynamic. Do you like to be in the middle of the action, love lively street scenes or environmental portraits with proximity to the subject? Then this slightly wide-angle focal length offers you just the right mix of width and naturalness.

50 mm – classic and balanced. Want to stay flexible and looking for a lens for everyday use, portraits and spontaneous moments? This focal length shows the subject realistically and offers you a harmonious balance between closeness and space.

85 mm – focused and aesthetic. Do you like working with strong isolation and want to capture details or faces perfectly? This focal length condenses the space and ensures soft backgrounds – ideal for portraits with depth.

Tip: If you are often on the move or want to cover as many situations as possible with just one lens, it may be useful to find your preferred focal length by trying them out. You may be surprised by the intimacy of 35 mm or the calmness of 85 mm – both will change the way you photograph.

Each focal length has its own visual language. By trying out different prime lenses, you will automatically develop a feel for perspective, proportions and distances – and gradually find your own personal photographic style.

Why prime lenses?

  • High light intensity for shots in low light or with selective background blur

  • Compact format – ideal for travelling or longer shoots

  • Maximum image quality – thanks to optimised lens construction

  • Intuitive handling – focus on the essentials without the distraction of zooming

  • Stylish work – through conscious choice of image section
