Wide-Angle Portraits

Most classic studio portraits are taken with focal lengths between 85 and 135mm. This is because distortion is minimized in this range, making faces appear more natural and flattering. But today, we’re turning the tables – and embracing the wide-angle look!

Instead of using traditional portrait focal lengths, we’re working with the TAMRON 17–50mm, which covers everything from ultra-wide-angle to standard range. This modern look is especially popular in fashion photography, as it adds more variety and visual interest to a photo series.

One of the biggest advantages of using a wide-angle lens is the ability to create unusual perspectives. Instead of shooting at eye level, you can position the camera above or below the subject to achieve dramatic effects. Things get especially interesting when you move closer to the model or place them at the edge of the frame – as this increases the amount of line distortion.

Instead of seeing distortion as a flaw, we can use it intentionally to create unique and artistic looks:

• Elongate arms and legs: By placing a leg or an arm closer to the camera, it appears longer and more emphasized.

• Highlight specific features: Wide-angle distortion can be used to draw attention to certain parts of the body and add visual tension to the composition.
